August is upon us, and the summer holidays are well and truly here! We have so much happening in the club over the summer holidays. Families – we are here for you all summer, with extra activities and water fun sessions to keep the kids entertained. This is all included in your membership fee!

Please also see the below Group exercise survey – your feedback is incredibly important to us and will help us shape the group exercise schedule ahead of September.

With all this in mind, please keep reading on to really get the most out of your membership!

As ever, if there’s anything myself or the team can help you with – please don’t hesitate to pop to reception.

The way you receive a class waiting list alert is changing… If you are on a class waiting list, and a space becomes available – you will receive an email to notify you of this space within 60 minutes of it becoming available! Simply press the ‘BOOK NOW’ button this email!

Please note – these spaces are allocated on a first come, first serve basis.

The Roko App – technical difficulties now resolved.

Technical difficulties with the Roko App have now been resolved. Please ensure to log in with your EMAIL ADDRESS and PASSWORD. Still having trouble? Please speak to a member of the team in-club who will be able to help you.

New energy efficient unit - thank you for your patience and understanding

If you’ve visited the club during the last week, you may have experienced some disruption to the usual cool air in the gym or studios at the club! I’m pleased to say that the period of work that has disrupted the club’s chiller is now over, and the chiller has been re-commissioned.

This work has all contributed to a brand-new unit, which helps the club become more energy efficient. Thank you again for your patience.

Group exercise classes – we need your feedback!

Dear Members,

When I first started in a gym in 2001, I enjoyed variety in my training schedule, I still do and find myself trying new things to continue progressing, learning and most importantly, sticking to my fitness regime. Initially I began purely training in the gym but after watching some classes take place one Monday evening, I decided to give them a go and was hooked. From then on, my weekly routine was divided between gym sessions and, at that time, my evening Body Pump and Body Balance. Over the years I have taken part in and taught Boxing fitness, Thai Boxing, Zumba, Bootcamps, running clubs, CrossFit, Spinning, Circuits, Personal Training, Yoga a variety of Les Mills classes and so on…

Why am I telling you this?? I understand the need for not only routine but also variety in a weekly session. Making sure I continue my exercise / fitness journey without becoming bored, keeping my eye on the goals, continuing to feel I am achieving - whether this is through Personal Training, attend the gym for a serious workout, a social catch up, some positivity on a cloudy day or just some quality YOU time.

I am taking a few weeks to review the class timetable that we currently offer you at ROKO York, but I cannot do that without your input. I only meet a handful of you so my views can be skewed and purely based on your attendance alone.

We would like to know what you like about the timetable. What are your favourite classes? Would you like to see anything different …or more of?

Personal Training sessions are about YOU. I will work with you to build your confidence, get you enjoying exercise, change your approach to your diet (no fad diets, extreme restriction or cutting out certain “bad” foods) and weight management (no drastic weight loss programmes, but consistent, small and gradual changes for the long term), tone up and improve your fitness.

I know how it feels to be self-conscious in the gym, feel like you don’t look the part or fit in, or like you have no idea what you’re doing - but together we will change that.

I have been training for 10 years now: starting with short runs with my cap pulled down low so no one I knew would see me; to coming to the gym 3 to 4 times a week and developing a real love for weight training, doing research (I’m a definite nerd) to build my skills and knowledge, and getting friends and family involved in being active; and now to retraining to become a qualified Fitness Instructor and Personal Trainer

Exercise and looking after my health has changed my life, and we can work together to change yours too.

· Level 3 Personal Trainer
· CPD Menopause, Movement and Nutrition
· Level 2 Fitness Instructor

We say goodbye to our Fitness Supervisor Helen…

Hello, I’m touching base with a bit of news for you. I’ll be leaving my positions as Fitness Supervisor, Duty Manager, PT and Gym floor Instructor at Roko Health Club after 14th August. I wanted to let you know that I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my time here over the past two years! I would also like to say a huge thank you to my clients, members and all my colleagues for making it the best experience in my career!

I will miss you all! Best wishes Helen x

P.S. I’ve told the next instructor to be just as excellent at timing circuits and to include stoppage time – if you know, you know! You’re welcome xx

Children’s News

Our summer junior activities timetable is here!

From Active Kids with Helen, Boxing Circuits with Pip to Fun & Games with Rhian… we have it all this summer! Classes are bookable via the club’s reception (either in-person or over the phone) up to 7 days in advanced. Active Kids classes vary each week – please speak to reception for more specific details.

We have also opened up some ADULT classes for children 12+ - see the below timetable for details and book at the club’s reception!

Every Thursday during summer holidays
£10 per family
3pm - 4pm
1 adult per max. 2 children (5 to 12 years)

Come along to get a proper workout in for you (always hard to do when the kids are off!), do something fun with the kids, burn off some of their energy and role model being active.

A reminder of the club rules for children & young adults…

  • Children are able to use the club anytime between 9am – 7pm.
  • All children under 12 years of age MUST be supervised at all times.
  • Children under 12 are NOT permitted to use the gym floor.
  • Children aged 12+ can use the gym floor, only following an induction with the fitness team and only when wearing a yellow Roko wristband.
