Portsmouth Newsletter August 2019

13th August 2019 | Portsmouth

Manager’s Welcome

Summertime and the weather is… hot. Please remember to hydrate during this season and bring a drinks bottle with you to the club when you work out.

Last month saw our first ever Swim Gala for or swimming lessons programme. It was great to see so many of the children in our swimming programme turn up and compete in this fun event. There were lots of proud parents and instructors watching and we thank you for your support. (We have already started planning the next one so we can make it even better.)

Our group exercise temporary summer holiday timetable is currently live until September. I understand that some members are missing out on their favourite class during this time and apologise for this however it allows us to put on additional classes in September when we know the club becomes busier again. Please can I remind all members to ensure that they are booking for classes and then swiping their cards at reception when they arrive at the club. This tells us who is attending classes, and if classes are not attended well we will change them for something else on the timetable to improve our offering. It could be your class that changes because we didn’t know you were going every week.

Remember it’s not too late to kick-start your summer fitness and you can at any time in your membership book in for a complimentary stayfit. session with one of your fitness team to re-energise your workouts and get that extra motivation to reach your goals.

I’m also pleased to announce that following some member feedback, we have recently  spent some time working closely with our air conditioning contractor to improve our studio air con. We have diagnosed a minor fault in the system that removes the hot air form the studios and hopefully in repairing it we have made a difference already during the classes this week.  Our top of the range chiller unit that was installed last year is still relatively new and therefore, with this alongside the repairs done this week, we should have some lovely cool studios for members to work out in.

Health and regards,

James Sandercock and your Roko Portsmouth Team

Please note that there are two exceptions to this:
Roko Gillingham, Nottingham and York members must pay £7.50 per visit to use Roko Chiswick Bridge.
Roko Health Club Portsmouth members must pay £5 per visit to use Roko Gillingham, Nottingham and York.  And £10 per visit to use Roko Chiswick Bridge.

Sales of high-caffeine energy drinks to children under 16
With health and wellbeing in mind please be aware that we are stopping the sale of high-caffeine energy drinks to children under 16 from 1st August 2019.
High-caffeine energy drinks carry advice stating that they are not recommended for children, and there are widespread concerns about the impact that these types of drinks can cause when consumed by children under 16.
Therefore Roko is choosing to proactively act on the manufacturers guidance and these health and wellbeing concerns.

Fitness News

Traffic Light System
As part of our continuous aspiration to improve our group exercise offering here at the club we are about to introduce a traffic light system for monitoring the classes. Simply put, we will be looking to see which classes are popular and which are not.
The information will be displayed outside the studios on the notice board from September onwards.
Classes in Green are those well attended classes that we will look to continue and potentially put on more of.
Amber classes are those that are stable but not over subscribed or full.
Red classes are those that are not well attended and therefore on a watch list for the current 3 month period. If their attendance does not improve we will exchange them out for an alternative class or try a different time slot for them on the next timetable update.

Children in classes
We would like to take this opportunity to remind parents that unfortunately children under the age of 16 cannot partake in aqua classes as we do not lifeguard these sessions and therefore we cannot allow them into the class as the parent or grandparent also partaking in the class is not directly supervising them in the pool either.  This is purely a safety precaution and apologise for any inconvenience caused.  For further information about children attending group exercise classes please ask at reception. Several of our group exercise instructors are not insured to teach children as they do not hold the relevant qualification to do so safely therefore we also suggest asking if children are permitted to a specific class before attending.
