Fitness News

–  Jack Dillon  Fitness Manager

Welcome to the start of spring. Now is crunch time to push your training further ready for the summer months. If you haven’t yet, please book in a rokofit. with one of our trainers, or you could take your training to the next level and book some sessions with our personal trainers.

We will soon be launching our new system which will allow you to book classes via a mobile app - all classes are going to become bookable. If you cannot attend a class you have booked you will be able to cancel it on the app but in the meantime, until the app is up and running, please call the club and cancel so that another member can take your place.

I would also like to bring to your attention the new Aqua class that started on the 8th of April. It will be every Sunday at 10:30am. All Aqua classes have a limit of 20 people per class. We also have our 30min rok-x classes on the gym floor throughout the day so don’t be scared. Instead  give it a go! They can help to break up your usual training session with a quick blast.

On the gym floor we are always looking to add new kit so any requests please do not hesitate to fill out a comment card at reception. With any new kit we do recommend you ask one of our trainers about it, they are more than willing to help you to get the most out of training with it.

I would finally like to thank you all for taking on board the changes to the gym floor and to training itself. The atmosphere on the gym floor is definitely picking up to feel like a gym where people really enjoy training. Keep pushing forward to achieve your goals, consistency is key!

Goals and Nutrition
Everyone joins a gym with a goal in mind. Whether or not they stick to that goal is the challenge. Some people’s physical goals are more visible than others; losing body fat, six pack for the beach, fitting back into the clothes that have become too small, etc.  However, there are many physical goals that are not as visible such as decreasing pain, increasing libido, reducing blood pressure, or simply reducing the amount of time you need to recover every time you walk up a flight of stairs.

Whatever your physical goals are, studies show that working out combined with proper nutrition net the greatest change and physical transformation, with most experts agreeing that nutrition plays the greatest role, with physical activity a close second.

And that’s where most gym-goers make their first mistake – they believe that signing up for a gym membership covers the bases and they neglect focusing on their nutrition. It’s easy for us to envision ourselves with toned physiques after weeks of working out and less simple to envision ourselves transforming after overhauling our diet.

Why? Because we lack the proper education and practice of eating healthy, and most people simply lack someone laying out the basics for them – a qualified nutritionist.

6 tips to help you kick your health into high gear without having to completely change your lifestyle:

• Give yourself a realistic time frame – Rome wasn’t built in a day and for most people, their health journey is a marathon, not a sprint. While those who are genetically blessed might see results in 4-6 weeks, they say that it takes 4 weeks for you to notice your body changing, 8 weeks for your friends, and 12 weeks for the rest of the world. Give yourself a minimum of 12 weeks to see the results of your hard work.

• Commit to a higher quality lifestyle – thinking of nutrition as a ‘diet’ will define your journey and create mental roadblocks. It’s not a diet; it’s a better lifestyle.

• Do it for YOU – You are the only thing that matters when it comes to your physical and mental health. Get those two in sync first for yourself, and then you can worry about everyone else.

• Be accountable - Check in regularly with a friend, personal trainer or nutritionist – being accountable helps keep you on track. Perhaps even keep a food diary; ate a Snickers and really not wanting to write that down? You’re only cheating yourself! Keeping yourself accountable and writing down the food you consume might also open your eyes when it comes to your unhealthy habits.

• Plan ahead - Plan out meals every 3 days. Schedule in your workouts – literally add them to your schedule so that time is blocked out. Many people say they don’t have the time, but studies show that we make time for those things in our life that are important to us. Make your health one of your top priorities!

• Stick to a Balanced and Steady Diet - Eat foods which keep your blood sugars level so you’re not reaching for a ready-made snack or meal. Keeping your blood sugars steady helps you to stick to your eating plan and also helps repair your metabolism. Think of food as fuel and your body as a luxury car. The worst thing you can do is put the wrong fuel in your petrol tank.

BONUS TIP:

NEVER forget to reward yourself after you reach your goal:  book a spa treatment or purchase a new outfit to fit your new figure. Whatever it might be, make sure to reward yourself – you’ve done the hard work!

And there you have it, my tips (and Bonus) to help you start and stick to your personal health journey.

Nutrition is much more than swapping those chips for salads or burgers for tofu. It must always be personalised. It’s about learning how your body works; how it metabolises fat, how it thrives on carbs and what type of lifestyle change it might respond to best. That’s what a qualified nutritionist can help you discover and more. Some individuals require more healthy fats, whilst others may benefit from more carbs. It can sometimes be as simple as adding more vegetables to your day. It all boils down to figuring out what works best for YOU.

My goal is to help you be the best version of yourself and that includes feeling and looking your best. For more information or to get in touch, please email me taelorcbennett@gmail.com or visit my website www.taelorbennett.com

How long have you been at Roko and what did you do before? Nearly 2 years, I started in May 2016

Favourite things about your job? The variety of the role and the team I work with

Do you have any hobbies? I love all sports, support Nottingham Forest and love a game of Golf.

What’s the most interesting fact about you? I broke several ribs whilst failing to balance on a wooden toadstool

If you were stuck on a desert island, what would you have with you and why? My 4 kids would have to be there as would my wireless headphones so that I can turn the music up when they get too loud

Instructor Profile of the month

Name: Sarah Latham

Classes taught at Roko:  Yoga on Wednesday evening and Saturday Morning

How long have you taught here: I've taught at Roko since it opened, which I think was in 2008.

How long have you been an instructor: 11 years.

What are the key body and mind benefits of attending your class:  My flow yoga classes combine carefully sequenced yoga postures that aim to challenge and stretch the body, breathing practices to help relax the mind and  restorative postures to nourish and replenish . My aim in class is to make you walk out feeling better than when you arrived.

What do you love about your class: The people who attend my classes:  they are enthusiastic, open minded and they have a good sense of humour (which is needed when I'm asking them to get into a 'Bird of Paradise' or hold that plank for another breath! )

If you were stranded on a desert Island what is the one thing you couldn’t live without: I should probably say a Yoga Mat as it would mean that I could practice yoga/ use it to lie on / shelter underneath it , but...I think I'd rather have an everlasting supply of chocolate.

Tell us a fun / unusual / interesting fact about yourself:  I wanted to be a fairy when I was 5 so that I could make wishes come true  (I still  would  rather like to be able to do this!); I met a Shamen while travelling in Tibet and I absolutely hate onions.
